Have you ever thought you would like to get out of the ‘rat-race’? Would you like to get away from those irksome work colleagues? Are you so frustrated that you’re tempted to take up Home based work?
Whilst a Home based business might seem the answer to all your prayers there are some disadvantages. Home based work is many and varied and can be well paid for those who get it right. Let’s look first at some of the good points of Work from home businesses and then we’ll look at some of the disadvantages, of which there are quite a few.
Good Points of A Home based business
1. No Traffic
A big advantage of a Work from home business is not having to struggle with the peak-hour traffic any more. You no longer have to stand outside waiting for a bus or train getting frozen in the winter or getting blown in the winds on a hot summer day. Nor do you have to face arriving at work frustrated because some inconsiderate person cut you off, or because there was a road block making you an hour late.
2. Extra Time
With the extra time you get back because you no longer have to travel to and from your place of work, you can do many things. Perhaps you could spend that time studying or you could take up a hobby or go to the gym? It could mean that now you can take those dancing classes you always wanted but were too tired at night to be bothered about. The time saved could be an extra five to ten hours a week. You can make good use of that time.
3. Free from Irritating Staff
You’ll no longer have to put up with those difficult-to-get-along with types at work. Imagine how sweet it would be never having to deal with them again.
4. Flexible Hours
If you chose you can usually make your hours flexible. You can fit them around the things you want to do and are now able to do. This doesn’t mean that you work less hours, just that they’re flexible. So if you want to take time out to go to the doctors, or to attend a class in the middle of the day, you can. It just means that you may chose to start extra early or work late at night.
5. Dress as You Like
Imagine not having to dress up every day. You can wear whatever is comfortable because no-one will see you. There’s no need to put a suit on unless you have to go out and meet your clients.
Disadvantages of a Home based business
1. Discipline
You need to be disciplined. Quite a number of people who work from home fall into the trap of not being disciplined. They think that because they don’t have to answer to a boss they can start whenever they chose, they can have all those lunches they’ve been missing out on with their friends and even attend that course they’ve always wanted to go to every Wednesday afternoon. Whilst they don’t have to spend time getting to work they still can’t seem to manage to start work at a reasonable hour. There is the temptation to begin doing lots of other things that you enjoy because you don’t have to answer to anyone. You have to make sure not only that you put in the required hours of work but also that you produce enough to bring in the income. Not everyone is good at this.
2. Working too many Hours
Some people fall into the trap of working too many hours. They just can’t stop and they feel they can never get away from their work. This is a big problem for many people who conduct a Work from home business. It is always there and even on the weekends or the evenings, something pops into their heads and they think they’ll just go and do it now. Before they know it, they’ve just worked another couple of hours when they’re supposed to be spending time with the family. These people have to take some control over themselves to make sure they take regular breaks.
3. Multi-tasking
You must also be willing to do a variety of tasks. Home based work requires that you be able to produce the actual product or service that you intend to sell, as well as doing all the administration. So you need to be good at administration otherwise your Work from home business will suffer. Some people just hate administration and don’t realize it until they start their Home based business. If you keep putting off attending to invoices and payment then very soon you’ll be short of income.
4. Sales Skills
One area where many people struggle is in sales. Not everyone is good at this and not everyone enjoys it. If you are selling over the internet then it’s a matter of getting your website and imaging right. However, if you have to sell face-to-face with your customers then you may need to do some training. It is a vital skill in any Home based business and if not done well, could mean that you’ll go out of business.
5. Isolation
Probably, the biggest complaint of anyone involved in Home based business is the isolation. Most people imagine they will love the peace and quiet of working from home and getting away from those irritating work colleagues. However, they soon realize that working from home can be very lonely. Some days the only people you talk to are those on the telephone. You miss the personal interaction. So it’s important to be ready for this and to set up strategies to deal with it. For example, you could go to the gym in the middle of the day to give you that personal contact and break up your day.
