Working from home is a dream shared by many – you can call your own hours, you can manage your own breaks, there is no stern-faced manager watching you like a hawk, your commute will be drastically shortened, and, most of all, you will be at home!
You will be able to earn what you want, when you want to. It sounds pretty good, does it not?
Of course it does! But, as you will soon learn, it is difficult to find home based work which is genuine. Home based business opportunities are quite easy to find, but are all of these ‘opportunities’ kosher, and do you really want to do the kind of work which is being offered?
You may end up stuffing envelopes, completing online surveys for money, even becoming part of a web-based pyramid scheme. You may get lucky and end up with a secure part time job doing something you enjoy, and which provides you with a comfortable income – that is of course the dream.
Where Can I Find Information About Home Based Work Opportunities?
Home based work can be found in many places. In earlier times, you would have been most likely to find advertisements in newspapers and magazines, and although it is still possible to find some opportunities for home based work listed in the periodicals nowadays, there is only one real source for this kind of work, and that is the internet.
If you are looking for home based work then it would be best to research local websites which list classified advertisements, and then look in the ‘part time jobs’ section. Home based work is often listed here - if there are any opportunities to work from home being offered, it is very likely that you will find them here.
Should I Start a Home Based Business?
Home based business is slightly different to home based work – rather than taking on work from somebody else and doing it at home, you will be running an entire business. You will have more responsibility, and any risks are likely to be shouldered by you alone. I am not saying this to dissuade you – if you have an idea for a business which you could run from home then you should investigate it and research the idea – make sure that you have planned every step of your business plan in detail. You will need to know what you are selling, and to whom you are selling it, and how to bring it to their attention.
Home business work opportunities depend on the individual – if you have had training in accountancy, for example, you could start a home based business offering financial advice for a fee; if you have been trained in languages, you could offer foreign language lessons from home.
Home based business can be difficult – the trick is to know your boss. That’s right – I mean you. If you have the discipline and motivation to ‘go to work’ in the morning and work all day, even if you only have to get out of bed and walk to your computer desk, without being distracted by your own environment, then you should be alright. If you are looking to start a home based business because getting up and going to work is just too much to bear, and you would rather work from home because you can do it with the telly on, you are probably doing it with the wrong motivation.
Home Based Work – Too Good To Be True?
Home business work opportunities are frequently advertised – usually offering you the opportunity to earn a huge amount of money while working very few hours. If you have recently looked at the ‘part time jobs’ section of a classifieds website then you will know the ads I am talking about – the ones which seem too good to be true. Many of these ‘opportunities’ for home based work consist of you having to pay a fee by credit card before you even find out exactly what you will be doing.
It is also unlikely that the type of work you will get through most of these ads is going to be very fulfilling. Yes, you may be able to earn a huge amount of money filling out surveys for the market research departments of large corporations, but if you have to spend 10 hours a day doing this in order to earn enough to live on, it is really not worth it.
It stands to reason that, if these jobs are really so easy, fulfilling and lucrative, wouldn’t everyone be doing them?
The same goes for some of the home business opportunities which can be found on the internet – ‘Being Your Own Boss’ may not be all it is cracked up to be – and you may find that the work you have to do for your newly set up franchise is even harder, more mind numbing, and more stressful than the work you were doing back when you had to travel all the way to work every morning.
